Medical Office Administration students receive an in-depth education in computer data entry of patient information; patient files; filing systems and records; insurance claim filing; billing and coding; and computer software programs.

Skill #1: Computer Data Entry – The medical office administrative assistant enters and updates data into a computer system database using a keyboard, optical scanner, or data recorder. Nearly every doctor, dentist, hospital, and medical facility needs computer data entry, and this skill can make you a good prospect to become a medical office administrative assistant.

Skill #2: Patient Filing Systems and Records – Keeping files organized and easily accessible means maintaining all patient data in a filing system. The medical office administrative assistant will want to work with an efficient system for medical records. There are many different filing systems used by medical facilities including alphabetic filing with color by letter, terminal digit filing, geographic and chronological filing, and EMR (electronic medical records).

Skill #3: Insurance Claim Filing and Billing – The medical office administrative assistant may file claims with an insurance provider. The insurance company responds with details of payment. The medical office biller then bills the patient.

Skill #4: Medical Coding – Coding is the process of translating information from patient records to standardized alphanumeric codes to submit to insurance companies. You will use diagnostic and procedural coding, such as ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), as well as HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System).
