Can I Learn Medical Assisting on the Job?

Are you interested in becoming a medical assistant but unsure you have the time and resources to attend school? Did you know you can complete a Medical Assistant program at Hunter Business School in as little as 7 ½ months attending full-time? And for those that work while going to school, we also offer a flexible 15-month evening schedule. But, are you asking yourself, “Can I learn medical assisting on the job?”

Can I Learn Medical Assisting on the Job?

While it is true that you don’t necessarily need a diploma to become a medical assistant, it is becoming increasingly hard to find an entry-level medical assistant position that doesn’t require some background in the medical field. Gone are the days when you could start a job and your employer fully trained you in every aspect of the job. This costs employers too much time and resources. They would rather candidates get a diploma to show they are serious about their profession.  You are much more able to compete in the job market if you have formal training and a credential.

While you will get some on-the-job training to learn precisely what is different about your employer, most general training is gained during a diploma program at Hunter Business School.

Why Get a Medical Assistant Diploma?

There are many benefits to attending the Medical Assistant diploma program at Hunter Business School. These benefits include:

Benefit #1: Few Knowledge Gaps

If you leave the training up to your employer, you may have some knowledge gaps. You may not even know they are there until it is too late. Instead of risking your career on employer training for general medical assistant knowledge, choose Hunter Business School’s Medical Assistant diploma program.

We offer a complete curriculum that includes assisting with minor surgeries and in-office procedures, pharmacology, communications, human relations, urinalysis, microbiology, phlebotomy, medical terminology, clinical skills, medical administrative and business practices, electrocardiography (EKG), electronic medical records and computerized billing. You will also participate in our externship program to get hands-on experience under supervision in a real setting, using the skills that you learned in school. Don’t rely on your employer to teach you how to be a successful medical assistant; leave your education to Hunter Business School.

Benefit #2: Stand Out in a Competitive Workforce

You can complete a diploma program if you want to catch an employer’s eye. The workforce is competitive; you need every edge to land that next medical assistant role.  Make your resume stand out and show employers that you can come in and go right to work.

Benefit #3: Opportunities for Advancement

Most medical assistants who become office managers or move up in the medical industry have some formal education. Employers look for educational achievements when promoting employees. Advance in your current career by completing a Medical Assistant diploma program.

Benefit #4: Build Confidence

When you start your new career as a medical assistant, you don’t want to have any doubts about your abilities. You won’t want to second-guess decisions because medical errors can be catastrophic. Instead, build your confidence by completing a Medical Assistant diploma program. You build your confidence and simultaneously build the trust of patients and coworkers. It’s a win-win.

Medical assistants are usually the first person a patient meets at a doctor’s office. With confidence, you can put the patient’s mind at ease, knowing they are in good hands. Going to the doctor can cause anxiety in some patients, and having a confident medical assistant helping them can ease their anxiety.

Benefit #5: Improve Communication Skills

Attending a Medical Assistant diploma program will teach you the terminology that will help you better communicate with patients and coworkers. In addition to clinical skills, your job may involve medical billing, patient records management, educating patients, and conveying important information to physicians. Good communication skills are paramount to being a successful medical assistant.

Benefit #6: Networking Opportunities

During your time at Hunter Business School, you will meet new people that you may stay in touch with throughout your lifetime. You will meet instructors and classmates who can help you excel in your career. Plus, you get to know industry individuals during your externship and gain experience you can put on your resume. Some of your new friends are good references when you apply for a new role. Build your network and keep in touch with the people you meet; you never know when you will need help finding a new job.

Benefit #7: Career Services

Did you know that Hunter Business School offers career services to graduates? That is right. At the end of the Medical Assistant diploma program, our career services staff will help you find a job that matches your skill set and interests. They will help you write a solid resume, prepare for those all-important interviews, and find job opportunities with employers in the community.
