A full-length feature film is shown today, Awakenings, starring Robin Williams, Robert De Niro, and Julie Kavner.
It tells the story of a fictional character, Dr. Malcolm Sayer, which is based on a real life experience of the author, who, in 1969, discovers beneficial effects of the drug L-Dopa. He administers it to catatonic patients who survived the 1917–28 epidemic of encephalitis lethargica.
