For the first day of Spirit Week at the Levittown campus, students are encouraged to wear blue in support of Autism Awareness Month.
The United Nations in 2007 proclaimed April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, but it also became a day to start a national conversation about autism. Later, when Light It Up Blue began, it also gave us the opportunity to start an even larger conversation about autism by wearing blue. [Autism Speaks]
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability. Signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.
ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum condition” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.
There is no known single cause of autism, but increased awareness and early diagnosis, intervention, and access to appropriate services and support lead to significantly improved outcomes.
