The Real Cost of Waiting to Change Your Career on Long Island

Can You Change Your Career Without Quitting Your Job? Yes. Here’s How.

There’s a version of going back to school that most people picture when the idea comes up. You give notice, clear your schedule, figure out the money situation later, and start fresh. It sounds clean in theory.

In reality, very few people can actually afford to do that, and most don’t. So, they wait. Another year has passed. Then another. The job doesn’t get better. The idea doesn’t go away. It just sits there.

Here’s what most people don’t realize: You don’t have to blow up your life to change it.

Hunter Business School has been helping Long Islanders do exactly that since 1972. For over 50 years, students who were working full-time, skeptical about the timing, and unsure whether they could pull it off without everything falling apart have enrolled and graduated. The ones who started found out quickly that the hardest part wasn’t the coursework. It was deciding to go. Hunter’s evening and online programs are specifically built so you don’t have to choose between the income you need right now and the career you actually want.

And the cost of waiting? It’s real. Every year you spend in a role that isn’t where you want to be is a year of salary you’re not earning in a better one, experience you’re not building, and momentum you’re not gaining. The runway doesn’t get longer the more you wait. It gets shorter.

Here’s what you can start without quitting anything.

Medical Assistant

Hunter’s CAAHEP-accredited Medical Assistant program is available as a 15-month evening program at both the Levittown and Medford campuses. You’ll train in phlebotomy, EKG, patient care, clinical procedures, and medical office administration. The program finishes with a hands-on externship at a real medical facility. By the time you’re done, you’ll have actual clinical hours behind you, not just a certificate. That’s what gets you hired.

Online Medical Billing and Coding

If your schedule shifts week to week and a fixed evening classroom isn’t realistic, this one was made for you. The Medical Billing and Coding program is 100% online with a live instructor. The day program finishes in 5 months. Evening runs 10 months.

You train in medical coding, insurance, electronic health records, billing software, and health care administration and come out with a path to national certification through the AAPC. No commute. No rigid schedule. No excuse to keep waiting.

Computer Technician Networking Specialist

Health care isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. The CTNS program trains you for a career in I.T., covering computer repair, network management, and the technical support infrastructure that every business runs on. It’s offered in person at both campuses.

If you’re someone who solves problems for fun and wants a field with staying power, reach out to admissions to get current schedule details and find out when the next class starts.

Practical Nursing (LPN)

The evening and weekend classes in Hunter’s Practical Nursing program run Monday through Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m., with clinical rotations on Fridays and Saturdays. Your days stay yours. The program takes 17 months in the evening format and prepares you to sit for your NCLEX-PN licensing exam.

Nursing is one of the most stable, in-demand fields on Long Island and across the country, and this is one of the most practical ways to get into it without walking away from your current paycheck while you do.

The Money Question

Having a job doesn’t disqualify you from financial aid. A lot of people assume it does and never look into it. Hunter’s financial aid team helps students figure out what federal options, payment plans, and loan repayment assistance are actually available to them. Applications are accepted year round, so there’s no waiting on a specific enrollment window to get the process started.

Stop Waiting for the Right Time. It’s Already Here.

The right time to change your career is never going to arrive on its own. It’s a decision, not a circumstance. And the good news is you don’t have to quit your job, empty your savings, or reorganize your entire life to make it happen. Hunter’s evening and online programs exist precisely because most people can’t do any of those things, and they shouldn’t have to.

Hunter has been on Long Island for over 50 years. Thousands of graduates came in exactly where you are right now, busy, uncertain, and tired of waiting. They didn’t wait for the perfect moment. They made the move, kept their job while they trained, and came out the other side in a career that made sense for their life.

That’s available to you too. Call our Levittown campus or Medford campus. Or head to the Student Inquiry Form on the Hunter website. Someone will get back to you with everything you need to figure out your next step.

The only thing that costs you is another year of waiting.
